Here's the latest on the Roadrunners, covering hockey and track & field:
Onyebuchi's Return to the Roadrunners
Defenseman Montana Onyebuchi has returned to the Tucson Roadrunners lineup, bringing a spark of energy and competitiveness to the team. In November, Onyebuchi made his presence felt, contributing two points in a series against the Colorado Eagles. Head coach Steve Potvin praised Onyebuchi's competitive spirit and his commitment to elevating the team. "His competitive spirit is more than welcome," Potvin said. "He was completely tied to the results of the last two games. You could see that he was trying to do what he could to elevate the team whenever he had a chance". Onyebuchi himself expressed his desire to reach the NHL soon.
Onyebuchi's return comes at a time when the Roadrunners are looking to improve their standing in the American Hockey League (AHL). As of early December, the team sits in ninth place in the Pacific Division with an 8-9-2 record. November was a tough month for the Roadrunners, who went 5-5-1 and struggled at home, going 3-4-0 at the Tucson Convention Center. However, they had a slightly better record on the road, going 2-1-1.
"Hell in the Pacific" Division
The Roadrunners compete in what has been described as the "Hell in the Pacific" division, reflecting the intense competition within the division.
The phrase "Hell in the Pacific" may allude to the historical battles in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The term evokes images of harsh conditions and fierce battles. It suggests a challenging and unforgiving environment where only the strong survive.
Roadrunners Track & Field
The UTSA Roadrunners women's track and field team was picked fourth in the American Athletic Conference preseason indoor poll, while the men's team was picked seventh. The women's team accumulated 108 points in the poll, trailing defending champion Tulane, South Florida, and Charlotte. Last indoor season, Tulane narrowly edged out the Roadrunners at the American Championships. The UTSA women's team scored 92.5 points.
Several Roadrunners athletes are preparing for the indoor season, which includes events such as the Ted Nelson Invitational in January and the American Conference Indoor Championships in late February.
