Lionel Messi's brilliance leads Inter Miami to a historic MLS Cup victory and championship title.

Fort Lauderdale, FL – In a momentous victory that solidifies his legacy in North American soccer, Lionel Messi inspired Inter Miami CF to their first-ever MLS Cup title, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Chase Stadium on Saturday. The Argentine maestro, with two assists, orchestrated the Herons' triumph, adding another trophy to his already illustrious career.

The match, played in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,556, saw Inter Miami secure their most sought-after trophy since Messi's arrival in July 2023. The victory marks Messi's 47th title, a world record, and Inter Miami's third trophy in the Messi era, following their Leagues Cup (2023) and Supporters' Shield (2024) wins.

The game began with Inter Miami taking an early lead in the 8th minute thanks to an own goal by Vancouver's Édier Ocampo, who deflected a cross from Tadeo Allende after a combination play between Messi and Rodrigo De Paul. Vancouver, however, proved to be a resilient opponent. Ali Ahmed leveled the score in the 60th minute with a shot that slipped past Inter Miami's goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo.

Messi then took control of the match, showcasing his brilliance with two crucial assists. In the 71st minute, he capitalized on a midfield turnover, threading a perfect pass to Rodrigo De Paul, who slotted the ball into the far corner. In the 96th minute, Messi slipped another pass through to Tadeo Allende, who sealed the victory with a low finish.

The win was especially sweet for Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who announced their retirement after the 2025 season. The two legends closed their careers by lifting a trophy alongside Messi. Inter Miami's head coach, Javier Mascherano, also celebrated his first title leading the squad.

Messi was named the MLS Cup 2025 MVP, presented by Audi, capping off a historic playoff run where he recorded a single-postseason record of 15 goal contributions (6 goals and 9 assists). He also made history alongside teammates Rodrigo De Paul and Sergio Busquets, becoming the first FIFA World Cup winners to lift an MLS Cup.

The victory not only brings sporting glory but also marks a historic milestone for the Inter Miami franchise and the city of Fort Lauderdale. With this triumph, Inter Miami consolidates a sports project centered around Messi and raises the level of MLS. The team will open their new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, next year as champions.
