Brendon McCullum counters Brisbane Test criticism: England's training wasn't lacking, they simply over-prepared for the Ashes.

Following England's crushing eight-wicket defeat to Australia in the second Ashes Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, head coach Brendon McCullum has responded to criticism surrounding the team's preparation by suggesting they may have "trained too much". The loss puts England down 2-0 in the five-match series, leaving their hopes of regaining the urn hanging precariously.

Former players, including Sir Geoffrey Boycott, Ian Botham, and Michael Vaughan, have voiced concerns over England's preparation, particularly the decision to forgo a warm-up match before the series and to not send main players to a pink-ball practice game in Canberra prior to the second Test. These concerns have mounted as England faces the prospect of another series defeat in Australia. England last won the Ashes in Australia in 2010-11.

McCullum, however, has dismissed these concerns, offering a different perspective on the team's performance. "Not from a preparation point of view. If anything, we've probably trained too much to be honest," McCullum told BBC's Test Match Special after the Brisbane Test. He elaborated that the team had five intense training sessions leading up to the game, and as a coach, he needs to be aware of the potential for overdoing things. McCullum emphasized the mental aspect of the game, stating, "as we all know in this game, it's playing the top two inches". He believes the team needs to find a way to be prepared both physically and mentally.

McCullum told Channel 7 post-match, "Leading into this Test match, I actually feel like we overprepared to be honest". He suggested that feeling fresh and ensuring mental clarity are crucial in the heat of battle. He indicated the team would take a few days off and adjust their training methods. Following the loss, the team is scheduled to head to Noosa for a break before the third Test in Adelaide.

When questioned about England's struggles on day two, where Australia scored rapidly to overturn their first-innings total, McCullum admitted, "We were trying too hard, is my assessment of it to be honest". He acknowledged deficiencies in batting, bowling, and fielding, stating the team needed to improve in all these areas.

England's captain, Ben Stokes, emphasized the importance of the mental approach. McCullum also called for being active to make better decisions on the field. "We all have to find a way that ensures that we feel prepared physically, technically, and we are ready for the battle, but also to make sure we are fresh and make sure we can make those decisions in the heat of the games," added McCullum.

Despite the defeat, McCullum remains confident in his team's ability to bounce back. He said on TMS that the team has been in similar situations before and needs to stay united and address the weaknesses exposed in the first two Tests. He acknowledged the difficulty of beating Australia at home when deficient in all areas and stressed the importance of not dwelling on the loss but rather focusing on improvement.

McCullum's remarks have drawn varied reactions, with some finding his claim of over-preparation "bizarre". Former England captain Kevin Pietersen expressed disbelief on X, seemingly questioning McCullum's assessment. Meanwhile, Botham has sharply criticized the team's lack of preparation, suggesting that fans deserve a refund.
