Vancouver Canucks fans are expressing concern after comments made by team captain Quinn Hughes regarding potential trade discussions. The worry stems from Hughes' casual reference to New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald as "Fitzy" while addressing rumors of a possible trade involving him.
The comment was made in response to a report by Elliotte Friedman that the Canucks and Devils had engaged in discussions about Hughes after the Canucks indicated that they were willing to listen to offers for veteran players and pending unrestricted free agents. When asked about the report, Hughes stated, "It wasn't like, if there was a call, me, Jim and Fitzy hopped on the call. You know, I wasn't a part of that but obviously I'm aware things like that could happen, for sure".
While the use of nicknames is common in hockey, some fans found it unusual that Hughes would use such familiar language when referring to the general manager of another team. This has led to speculation that Hughes and Fitzgerald may have a closer relationship than previously known, fueling concerns that Hughes might be open to a trade to the Devils, where his brothers Jack and Luke Hughes already play.
The timing of Hughes' comments is particularly sensitive, as there has been ongoing uncertainty about his long-term future with the Canucks. In September 2025, Hughes stated that his decision to commit to the Canucks long-term would depend on the team's performance in the upcoming 2025-26 season. He emphasized that a successful season would be crucial in his decision-making process.
Hughes's agent has not commented on the situation.
The Canucks are aiming to improve after a disappointing 2024-25 season where they finished fifth in the Pacific Division with 90 points. Although key players like Brock Boeser have re-signed, signaling a commitment to compete, Hughes's uncertain future continues to loom over the franchise.
Hughes's talent and leadership are undeniable, establishing him as one of the league's premier defensemen. He won the Norris Trophy in 2024. He has expressed a sense of obligation to the Canucks, stating that he feels responsible for helping the team achieve success. "This team named me captain, and I feel obligated to be a successful team here," Hughes said in April 2025. "That weighs heavily on me; I want to do something here".
However, he has also avoided making any firm promises about staying in Vancouver long-term. This has led to speculation about his potential interest in joining his brothers in New Jersey should he test free agency in 2027. Despite the external noise, Hughes maintains that he is focused on the present and is determined to lead the Canucks to a successful season. "Noise doesn't bother me," Hughes said in September 2025. "It's a long year, and I'm just going to be day-to-day and focus on the short term. That's the truth, honestly".
