Bilbao, Spain – The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) team bus was stoned outside their hotel in Bilbao following their UEFA Champions League draw against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night. The incident occurred after the match, which ended in a 0-0 draw, as the bus was parked near the team's accommodation in the city center.
According to sources close to the club, the bus was empty at the time of the attack. Upon inspection, two visible cracks were found on the vehicle. Local authorities were immediately alerted, and two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. PSG is reportedly considering legal action following the attack.
The team was able to leave Bilbao safely on Thursday morning, departing from the city's airport for their return to Paris. The club arranged alternative transport for the journey to the airport. The team left the hotel around 9:30 a.m. and took off from the Basque region at 10:40 a.m., with an expected landing in Paris at 11:55 a.m.
The match itself saw a determined Athletic Bilbao side hold the reigning European champions to a goalless draw. Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon delivered an outstanding performance, making multiple crucial saves to deny PSG's attacking threats. The result leaves PSG in third place in their Champions League group, with their chances of advancing to the last 16 still in their control. They are set to face Sporting Lisbon away on January 20 and host Newcastle eight days later.
PSG's Vitinha told Canal+ that the team always wants victory but that it becomes difficult in a Champions League game when they don't score. He added that they wasted too many chances, which can happen but makes a difference in that type of match.
Tensions surrounding the match were high, with increased security measures implemented around San Mamés stadium. Over 600 local Basque police officers were deployed in addition to regular forces, due to the expected fiery atmosphere and past incidents in 2011, when ultras of both clubs clashed.
The incident with the PSG team bus marks the second instance this week of a visiting team's transportation being targeted. Juventus' bus was also stoned by Napoli fans during a Serie A match in Italy, resulting in damage to several windows. This was allegedly due to anger over former hero Luciano Spalletti coaching the rival team.
Despite the unsettling events, PSG remains focused on their Champions League campaign. They currently sit third in their group, behind Arsenal and Bayern Munich. The team will look to put the incident behind them as they prepare for their upcoming matches.
