Virat Kohli has recently opened up about the pivotal role MS Dhoni played in the early stages of his international career, particularly regarding his debut for India. Kohli, who debuted in 2008 under Dhoni's captaincy, revealed the backing and clarity he received from Dhoni and then-coach Gary Kirsten, which significantly shaped his approach to the game.

Kohli admitted that he wasn't overflowing with confidence upon entering the senior Indian team, despite leading India to an Under-19 World Cup title. He felt his game was not up to par with other players and that his determination was his biggest strength. This relentless drive caught the attention of Dhoni and Kirsten, who saw beyond any technical shortcomings.

According to Kohli, Dhoni and Kirsten made it clear that they were backing him to play at number three. They emphasized the value of his energy and attitude on the field. Kohli stated that they valued his willingness to stay in the fight and not give up. This clear communication and support from the captain and coach were crucial in helping Kohli settle into the team and perform to his potential.

While some reports suggest that Dhoni was initially hesitant about Kohli's debut, preferring S. Badrinath, it was Dilip Vengsarkar, the then-chief selector, who insisted on Kohli's inclusion in the team for the ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2008. Although Kohli's debut performance was not spectacular, scoring only 12 runs, he proved his mettle with a half-century in the fourth game of the series, contributing to India's historic ODI series win in Sri Lanka.

Dhoni's influence extended beyond just the backing at the No. 3 position. He mentored Kohli as the youngster grew into one of the best batsmen in the world. Their camaraderie was evident both on and off the field, with Dhoni always offering guidance and support to Kohli. Even after Dhoni passed the captaincy to Kohli, their relationship remained strong, with Dhoni playing under Kohli in the Champions Trophy 2017 and the ODI World Cup 2019.

Dhoni has also spoken about his relationship with Kohli, recalling their memorable partnerships and how much they enjoyed running between the wickets. He praised Kohli as one of the best in the world and said that batting with him was always fun.

The respect and admiration between Kohli and Dhoni are mutual. In 2022, Kohli posted a picture with Dhoni on social media, referring to him as "always my captain". Their bond transcends the typical junior-senior dynamic, though Dhoni acknowledges that a line always exists between them. Kohli has also mentioned that Dhoni was the only person who reached out to him when he stepped down from captaincy.

Kohli is currently having another impressive IPL season, scoring 505 runs in 11 games for RCB.
