England Test captain Ben Stokes has made a significant lifestyle change by quitting alcohol in a determined effort to reach peak fitness ahead of the upcoming Test series against India and the Ashes series later in the year. Stokes, who has been recovering from a recurring hamstring injury, revealed that he has been abstaining from alcohol since January 2, 2025, as part of his meticulous rehabilitation process.

The 33-year-old all-rounder suffered a hamstring tear during the third Test against New Zealand in December, which followed a similar injury he sustained during The Hundred tournament in August. These injuries forced him to miss important series, including the Tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and highlighted the need for a more comprehensive approach to his fitness and recovery. Stokes underwent surgery in December to repair the hamstring, and since then, his recovery has been carefully managed to ensure he returns in optimal condition.

Stokes' decision to quit alcohol stems from a realization that his previous drinking habits may have contributed to his injuries and hindered his recovery. Speaking on the Untapped podcast, Stokes recalled the shock and disappointment he felt after his first major injury. He questioned whether having "a bit of a drink four or five nights ago" could have played a part in the injury, admitting that it "wouldn't have helped." This realization prompted him to re-evaluate his lifestyle and make necessary changes to prioritize his fitness.

Stokes clarified that he doesn't intend to remain completely sober forever, but he acknowledged the importance of abstaining from alcohol until he is fully recovered and back on the field. He described his previous drinking habits as "all or nothing," indicating a tendency to consume excessively at social gatherings. This pattern, he admitted, had sometimes frustrated those close to him.

In addition to quitting alcohol, Stokes has also partnered with CleanCo, a non-alcoholic spirits company, as both an investor and brand partner. This collaboration reflects his commitment to a healthier lifestyle and aligns with his new off-field priorities.

Stokes' commitment to fitness extends beyond abstaining from alcohol. He has been working hard in the gym and focusing on his training to ensure he is in the best possible shape for the upcoming Test series. His county coach at Durham, Ryan Campbell, noted that Stokes has been "working his butt off" to regain his fitness, highlighting his dedication and work ethic.

Stokes is set to make his comeback in England's one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, starting on May 22. This match will serve as a crucial opportunity for him to test his fitness and prepare for the challenging five-Test series against India, which begins in June. With the Ashes series against Australia also on the horizon, Stokes is determined to be in peak physical condition to lead his team and contribute to their success.

By prioritizing his fitness and making significant lifestyle changes, Ben Stokes is demonstrating his commitment to his career and his team. His decision to quit drinking is a testament to his maturity and his understanding of the demands of modern cricket. As he embarks on this new chapter, Stokes hopes to inspire his teammates and fans with his dedication and determination.
