A dark cloud has been cast over the Indiana Pacers' otherwise successful run in the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Knicks. What should be a time of excitement and passionate rivalry has been marred by an alleged act of violence, with an Indiana Pacers fan accused of stabbing a New York Knicks fan during a Game 2 watch party.

The incident reportedly occurred at Danny Boy Beer Works in Carmel, Indiana, on Friday night, during the game where the Pacers defeated the Knicks 114-109. According to reports, 24-year-old Jarrett Funke, allegedly approached two Knicks fans at the brewery, escalating a verbal altercation into a physical one. Witnesses claim Funke smacked a Knicks hat off one of the fans, and challenged them to a fight, before being asked to leave the premises.

The situation then reportedly escalated when the two Knicks fans went onto the patio to smoke. Funke allegedly returned, "stormed through the fence" and attacked them. One of the victims said he briefly displayed a pocket knife to deter Funke but put it away without using it. Funke then allegedly pulled out his own knife and stabbed one of the men in the back. The other man sustained a leg injury after reportedly cutting himself on a patio stoop while attempting to intervene.

When police arrived, they found two individuals with wounds. One had a stab wound in the back, and the other had a laceration in his lower leg. Both men were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Funke was apprehended in the parking lot and interviewed by police. He claimed the Knicks fans started the altercation by "talking s***," pushing him to the ground, and punching him in the face. He stated that he retrieved his pocketknife from his hoodie and swung it at one of the Knicks fans in self-defense. However, witnesses at the scene painted a different picture, identifying Funke as the primary aggressor.

As of Tuesday, Funke was being held in Hamilton County Jail. He has been charged with multiple felonies, including battery by means of a deadly weapon, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon. The first two charges are level 5 felonies, carrying a potential sentence of one to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The third charge is a level 6 felony, punishable by a fine and a prison sentence of six months to 30 months. Funke's initial hearing was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among fans of both teams and the wider NBA community. It serves as a stark reminder of how passion for sports, while often a source of camaraderie and excitement, can sometimes boil over into dangerous and unacceptable behavior. The Pacers and Knicks rivalry, while intense, should remain confined to the court, with respect and sportsmanship prevailing among fans.
