The Indiana Fever are facing a challenging start to the 2025 WNBA season, compounded by a series of injuries to key players. As they prepare to host the Washington Mystics on June 3, the availability of Sophie Cunningham is uncertain, adding to the team's woes.

Cunningham sustained a right ankle injury during the Fever's recent game against the Connecticut Sun and was unable to return. This is particularly concerning as she had previously injured the same ankle in the preseason, causing her to miss the first two regular-season games. According to reports, Cunningham did not participate in Sunday's practice, casting doubt on her readiness for Tuesday's game. Coach Stephanie White has described Cunningham's status as "day-to-day," and while MRI results were encouraging, her availability will depend on her progress in rehab.

Adding to the injury concerns, guard Sydney Colson also suffered a left leg injury in the same game against the Sun. Like Cunningham, Colson is considered day-to-day. With Caitlin Clark already sidelined due to a left quad strain, the Fever's backcourt is significantly depleted. Clark is expected to be out for at least another week.

In response to these injuries, the Fever have signed guard Aari McDonald via an emergency hardship exception. This move brings the team's roster to eight healthy players. Fever President Kelly Krauskopf indicated the team's intention to add another player before the game against Washington.

Given the injuries, the Fever's starting lineup against the Mystics is difficult to predict. Previously, projections suggested a starting five of Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard, and Aliyah Boston. However, with Clark and potentially Cunningham and Colson unavailable, adjustments will be necessary. Potential changes could see Lexie Hull, and Brianna Turner taking on increased roles.

Coach White has emphasized the need for other players to step up in Clark's absence. The Fever will also rely on veteran players like DeWanna Bonner, who had a season-high 21 points in their previous game against the Mystics. The Fever lost to the Mystics in their previous encounter with a score of 83-77. Brittney Sykes led Washington with 21 points.

The game against the Mystics marks the first Commissioner's Cup game for both teams. All games played between June 1-17 will count towards the Commissioner's Cup standings. The two teams with the best record in each conference will compete in the championship game on July 1.

The Fever's ability to compete against the Mystics will depend heavily on the status of Cunningham and Colson. The team will also need strong performances from its healthy players to compensate for the absence of key contributors.
