PWHL Seattle has made a significant splash as the Professional Women's Hockey League's (PWHL) exclusive signing window opened, securing the signature of American hockey icon Hilary Knight. The announcement marks a pivotal moment for the expansion team as they build their roster for the 2025-26 season. Knight, a celebrated forward, joins Seattle on a one-year standard player agreement, signaling a clear intent to compete at the highest level from the get-go.

Knight's arrival in Seattle represents more than just an acquisition of talent; it's the addition of a leader and a symbol for the franchise. As General Manager Meghan Turner stated, "Signing Hilary Knight was an absolute no-brainer – she's the heartbeat of any team she joins." Turner, who previously worked with Knight as the assistant GM for the Boston Fleet, recognizes the intangible qualities Knight brings, emphasizing her leadership, drive, and ability to elevate those around her. Knight's proven ability to define a team's culture makes her an invaluable asset as Seattle embarks on its inaugural campaign.

The 35-year-old Knight comes to Seattle after two seasons with the Boston Fleet. In 54 regular-season games with the Fleet, she recorded 21 goals and 19 assists. In the 2024-25 season, Knight tied for the league lead with 29 points (15 goals and 14 assists) in 30 games, which also tied her with Sarah Fillier of New York. Her performance earned her a nomination as a finalist for both the PWHL Forward of the Year and the Billie Jean King MVP awards. Knight also captained the Fleet, further underscoring her leadership capabilities.

Knight's resume extends far beyond the PWHL. She has represented the United States in four Olympic Games, winning one gold and three silver medals. Additionally, she has competed in a record 15 IIHF Women's World Championships, securing 10 gold and five silver medals. Knight stands as the tournament's all-time leader in goals, assists, and points and holds the distinction of having played in the most Olympic games for a U.S. women's hockey player.

"I'm incredibly proud to be part of bringing professional women's hockey to the Pacific Northwest," Knight said. "Seattle holds a special place in my heart, and I'm beyond excited to join PWHL Seattle in such a storied sports city." Knight has already experienced the Seattle hockey atmosphere, having played at Climate Pledge Arena during the PWHL Takeover Tour and in a Rivalry Series game against Canada.

While Knight was the first official signing for Seattle, reports indicate that Canadian forward Danielle Serdachny has also signed with the team. Serdachny, 24, was drafted second overall by the Ottawa Charge in the 2024 PWHL Draft.

The PWHL's expansion process allows Seattle and Vancouver to each sign up to five players before the expansion draft on June 9. This initial signing window provides an opportunity to secure key players and establish a foundation for their respective teams. Following the signing period, both teams will participate in the expansion draft, selecting players from the existing six teams to reach a 12-player roster minimum. The PWHL Draft on June 24 will then allow them to fill out their rosters further.

With the addition of Seattle and Vancouver, the PWHL aims to solidify its presence in both the United States and Canada, creating a balanced league with strong representation in key hockey markets. As Hilary Knight embarks on this new chapter in her career, her leadership and skill will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the identity and competitiveness of PWHL Seattle.
