Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sean Monahan has been awarded the 2024-25 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, an honor bestowed upon the NHL player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey." The award is presented annually by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) and commemorates the late Bill Masterton, who played for the Minnesota North Stars and tragically died from an injury sustained during a game in 1968.

Monahan's journey to this recognition is one filled with both personal and professional challenges. Drafted sixth overall by the Calgary Flames in 2013, Monahan quickly established himself as a consistent and reliable player. However, over the years, he faced his share of adversity, including significant injuries ranging from hip surgeries that limited his playing time. Despite these physical setbacks, Monahan demonstrated remarkable resilience, consistently working to overcome obstacles and maintain his presence in the league.

Beyond the physical challenges, Monahan experienced a profound personal tragedy during the offseason. After signing with the Blue Jackets on July 1, 2024, with the primary goal of reuniting with his close friend and former Calgary teammate, Johnny Gaudreau, Monahan was devastated by Gaudreau's sudden and tragic death in August. The loss of his best friend, with whom he had anticipated rekindling their on-ice chemistry and building a future alongside in Columbus, was a heavy blow.

Despite this immense emotional pain, Monahan displayed incredible strength and dedication. He chose to honor Gaudreau's memory by dedicating his season to his late friend. He channeled his grief into motivation, becoming a key leader and top performer for the Blue Jackets. In 54 games, Monahan scored 19 goals and recorded 38 assists, totaling 57 points. His performance not only contributed to the team's near playoff contention but also served as an inspiration to his teammates and the entire organization. Monahan's 1.06 points per game led Columbus and was the highest by any first-year player for the team. He also led the NHL in 5-on-5 assists per 60 minutes, with 2.18.

The presentation of the Masterton Trophy to Monahan was particularly poignant. In a surprise visit at his home, Meredith Gaudreau, Johnny's widow, presented him with the trophy. This emotional moment underscored the deep bond between Monahan and the Gaudreau family and highlighted the perseverance and character that defined Monahan's season.

Monahan is the first player in Blue Jackets history to win the Masterton Trophy, joining Nick Foligno (2018-19) and Kevin Dineen (2000-01, 2001-02) as the only Columbus players to be named a finalist. His win also results in a $2,500 grant from the PHWA to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund in his name.

Other finalists for the award this year included Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog.
