Egor Sokolov's 2024-25 season with the Utah Mammoth organization presents a mixed bag of observations. Acquired by Utah HC from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Jan Jenik in July 2024, the hulking power forward, drafted 61st overall by Ottawa in 2020, brought a blend of size and offensive instincts to the team. He signed a one-year, two-way contract with the club with a cap hit of $775,000, expiring at the end of the season, becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Sokolov's journey in 2024-25 saw him navigate between the NHL and AHL levels. After being placed on waivers by Utah HC, he was assigned to AHL Tucson. However, his performance in the AHL showcased his offensive capabilities. In November 2024, he was recognized as the AHL Player of the Week after scoring four goals in two games, two of which were game-winners. Over the course of the 2024-25 season with the Tucson Roadrunners, Sokolov tallied a noteworthy 22 goals and 22 assists for 44 points in 75 games.
His strengths lie in his size (6'3", 216 lbs), a powerful shot, and a willingness to use his physicality. Scouts have noted his ability to freeze defenders with the threat of his shot, creating opportunities for teammates. However, his skating has been identified as an area needing improvement, potentially hindering his transition to a consistent NHL role.
Prior to joining the Utah organization, Sokolov had a productive 2023-24 season with the Belleville Senators in the AHL, where he recorded 21 goals and 46 points in 71 games. He also led Belleville in power-play goals (10) and shots (214). He also appeared in five NHL games with Ottawa in 2022-23, notching a goal and an assist.
Looking ahead, Sokolov's future remains uncertain as he enters unrestricted free agency. His blend of size, scoring ability, and AHL success could make him an attractive option for teams seeking depth and potential offensive contributions. However, he needs to continue to work on his skating and overall consistency to solidify his place as an everyday NHL player.
