Jesper Bratt's Leadership: Why He's Ready to Wear an "A" for the New Jersey Devils

Jesper Bratt's evolution with the New Jersey Devils has been remarkable. Drafted as a late-round pick, he has defied expectations and blossomed into a true cornerstone for the franchise. Entering his eighth season with the team, Bratt's consistent offensive output, combined with his growing versatility and leadership qualities, makes him a prime candidate to be an alternate captain.

Bratt's journey from a sixth-round pick to a top player is a testament to his dedication and skill. He made an immediate impact upon joining the Devils, showcasing his offensive prowess from the start. While his early seasons saw him consistently in the 30-point range, his production has since exploded, establishing him as one of the team's most reliable point-getters. Since 2021-22, Bratt has consistently surpassed the 70-point mark each season. In the 2024-2025 season, Bratt led the team with 88 points, also achieving career highs in assists (67) and power-play points (34). His playmaking ability is such that he even broke a franchise record for most assists in a single season, previously held by Devils' legend Scott Stevens.

Beyond his offensive contributions, Bratt has also developed into a more versatile and well-rounded player. He has become an important asset on special teams, contributing both on the power play and the penalty kill. Furthermore, he has improved his physical game, becoming stronger in the defensive zone. During the 2024-2025 season, his increased physicality and shot-blocking abilities earned praise from head coach Sheldon Keefe.

With the possibility of Ondrej Palat being traded, there may be a need to name a new alternate captain. Alongside captain Nico Hischier, Bratt is one of the longest-tenured players on the team. His skills and experience make him worthy of a leadership title, so he should be the next Devil to wear an “A” on his jersey.

Bratt's dedication to the team and his consistent performance make him a natural fit for a leadership role. During the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, after the team lost Jack Hughes to a season-ending shoulder injury, Bratt recognized that it was time for other players to step up. Coach Keefe noted that Bratt had become an even bigger focal point for the opposition, but he managed the added pressure well.

Awarding Jesper Bratt the alternate captaincy would not only recognize his accomplishments and contributions to the team but also send a strong message about the kind of player and person the Devils value. He embodies the qualities of a leader, both on and off the ice, and his influence would undoubtedly have a positive impact on the team's performance and culture.
