Rishabh Pant's England Arrival: Remembering Rohit Sharma and Their On-field Garden Banter

The Indian cricket team has arrived in England for a highly anticipated five-match Test series, marking the start of a new era for the team. As the squad touched down in the UK, a lighthearted moment revealed the camaraderie within the team, but also a tinge of nostalgia as they embark on this journey without some familiar faces.

The series, which is part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle, will be held across five iconic venues: Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. However, this tour marks a significant transition, with Shubman Gill taking over as captain following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket. Rishabh Pant has been named the vice-captain, signaling a generational shift in Indian Test cricket.

Upon the team's arrival at Mumbai airport, the ever-present paparazzi were keen to get a few words from the players. When Rishabh Pant, the newly appointed vice-captain, was asked about the whereabouts of Rohit Sharma, his response was both humorous and heartfelt. Pant quipped, "Garden mein ghoom rahe hain," which translates to "He is roaming around in his garden." When further asked if he would miss the garden, Pant added, "Garden ki bahut yaad aayegi," meaning "I am going to miss the garden a lot."

Pant's words weren't just a casual response; they echoed a sentiment felt by many within the team and among the fans. Rohit Sharma, who led India in Test cricket for the last two and a half years, called time on his career ahead of the England tour. His presence, both on and off the field, will be sorely missed. Rohit's captaincy was characterized by the backing he gave to players, both in home and away conditions. He guided the team to the World Test Championship Final in 2023 and fostered a positive team environment.

The bond between Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant is well-known. Rohit has often spoken about Rishabh as someone he turns to when he needs to laugh or lighten his mood. He has also expressed his disappointment when Rishabh was sidelined due to injury. Their camaraderie is evident in their interactions, with Rishabh often seen joking around with Rohit's daughter, Samaira.

The absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli undoubtedly leaves a void in the Indian Test team. Shubman Gill, the new captain, acknowledged the difficulty of replacing such experienced players. However, the team is looking forward to begin their WTC campaign on a strong note.

Several Indian players had already arrived in England to participate in warm-up matches representing India A against the England Lions. The remaining squad members arrived in the UK on Friday.

As the team gets ready for the first Test on June 20 in Leeds, the memories of Rohit Sharma's contributions and leadership will surely serve as an inspiration. While the "garden" may be missed, the team is focused on forging a new path under the leadership of Shubman Gill, carrying forward the legacy of their predecessors.
