In a compelling display of skill and resilience, Steve Smith etched his name in cricket history during the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) Final between Australia and South Africa at Lord's. Smith's composed innings of 66 runs not only provided stability to the Australian innings but also propelled him past Sachin Tendulkar in the record books for most 50-plus scores in ICC knockout matches and also helped him achieve the most runs by any overseas player at Lords.

Australia found themselves in a precarious situation early in their innings, losing wickets and struggling against South Africa's potent pace attack. Walking in with the score at 16/2, Smith demonstrated his experience and class, constructing a crucial innings that steadied the ship for his team. His 66 runs came off 112 balls and included 10 boundaries. He formed a vital partnership with Beau Webster.

In addition to his crucial WTC Final innings, Smith has consistently delivered in high-pressure situations throughout his career. Smith now holds the record for the second-most fifty-plus scores in ICC tournament knockout matches, with seven, surpassing Tendulkar's previous mark of six. Virat Kohli still remains at the top.

Furthermore, Smith's innings at Lord's saw him achieve another remarkable feat. He now holds the record for the highest number of runs scored by a visiting batter at the iconic venue, surpassing legends such as Sir Don Bradman and Sir Garfield Sobers. Smith's aggregate at Lord's now stands at 591 runs, exceeding Bradman's 551 and Sobers' 571. Other notable players on the list include Warren Bardsley (575), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (512), Dilip Vengsarkar (508), and Allan Border (503).

Kagiso Rabada, South Africa's pace spearhead, acknowledged Smith's importance to the Australian team, praising his resilience and ability to perform under pressure. Smith, in turn, lauded Rabada's bowling performance, recognizing him as one of the best in the world when in rhythm.

As the WTC Final progresses, Smith's contributions with the bat have positioned Australia favorably. His innings not only showcased his individual brilliance but also highlighted his value as a clutch performer for his team in critical moments. With Australia aiming to secure the WTC title, Smith's experience and ability to deliver under pressure will be crucial factors in their quest for victory.
