The Indian women's hockey team suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat against Australia in their FIH Pro League 2024-25 match, held at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London, England, on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Despite a spirited comeback in the final quarter, India couldn't overcome the three-goal deficit created by the Hockeyroos.

Australia dominated the first three quarters, with goals from Courtney Schonell (16'), Lexie Pickering (27'), and Tatum Stewart (35'). India, however, showcased resilience in the final quarter, with Deepika (44') and Neha (52') scoring to reduce the margin. Ultimately, Australia managed to hold their nerve and secure the victory. This match also marked a significant milestone for midfielder Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, who celebrated her 50th international appearance for India.

The match began with both teams displaying intent and valuing possession. India adopted a patient approach, while Australia focused on applying pressure on the Indian defense. Australia earned a penalty corner in the 10th minute, but the Indian defense stood firm. India's best opportunity came late in the first quarter when a swift attacking move forced Australian goalkeeper Zoe Newman to make a crucial double save.

Early in the second quarter, Courtney Schonell capitalized on a precise pass from Grace Stewart, giving Australia the lead with a well-taken finish. In the 27th minute, a turnover from Navneet led to a series of shots on goal by Australia. Although Savita initially saved two consecutive shots, Lexi Pickering managed to slot the rebound past the Indian goalkeeper, doubling Australia's advantage before halftime.

Australia continued their relentless pressure after the restart, earning another penalty corner. Although Sunelita Toppo defended the initial attempt, Australia was awarded a penalty stroke. Tatum Stewart converted the penalty stroke, extending Australia's lead to 3-0.

Despite the scoreline, India refused to concede defeat. Their efforts finally paid off in the 44th minute when Deepika converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag flick. The final quarter saw India dominate, earning a series of penalty corners. In the 52nd minute, Neha reacted quickly to a rebound off the Australian goalkeeper, further narrowing the gap to 3-2.

In the closing minutes, India had a golden opportunity to equalize from a penalty corner, but they couldn't capitalize. Australia's defense held firm, denying India the equalizer and securing the win.

With this result, India is currently in seventh place in the FIH Pro League points table. The Indian team will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming matches to improve their position in the league standings.
