Shubman Gill's recent appointment as the Indian Test captain has been met with excitement and anticipation. The 25-year-old is set to lead the team in the upcoming series against England, marking a new chapter in his career and for Indian cricket. In a candid conversation with veteran cricketer Dinesh Karthik, Gill opened up about his reaction to the news and, more poignantly, his father, Lakhwinder Gill's, response.

"Honestly, I don't think even my father dreamt of me becoming India's Test captain. And I definitely didn't," Gill shared with a smile, highlighting the unexpected nature of this monumental achievement. "It wasn't even in my dreams to be the captain." He revealed that his childhood dreams were simpler: to play for India, perform well, and contribute to the team's victories. The captaincy, however, was beyond even his most ambitious aspirations.

Gill disclosed that he kept the news under wraps until it was official. "He called me when the news broke. I knew a bit earlier but waited till it was official," Gill stated. The conversation that followed was deeply emotional. "We had a very heartfelt conversation once he found out." It's evident that this achievement is not just a personal milestone for Gill but also a proud moment for his family, especially his father, who has been a constant source of support throughout his cricketing journey.

Lakhwinder Gill's reaction underscores the magnitude of his son's accomplishment. For a father who nurtured his son's cricketing ambitions from a young age, seeing him rise to the pinnacle of Test leadership is a dream realized, perhaps even one he didn't dare to imagine.

Beyond the personal emotions, Gill is focused on his responsibilities as captain. He emphasized the importance of creating a secure and happy environment within the team. "Apart from all the silverware and all the trophies aside, I would really like to build a culture where everyone is very secure and happy," Gill stated. He recognizes the challenges of a high-pressure environment with intense competition and frequent team changes, but he believes that fostering a sense of security and camaraderie is crucial for success.

Gill has also spoken about his discussions with the selectors, Ajit Agarkar, and the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir. "They just want me to be able to express myself as a leader," he revealed. "That's what they've told me: there are no expectations, they aren't expecting me to do something I'm not capable of. So in that sense, I don't think there's any pressure or specific expectation from them." This support from the coach and selectors allows Gill to focus on his natural leadership abilities and implement his vision for the team.

Acknowledging the contributions of his predecessors, Gill credited Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for shaping his understanding of leadership. He admired Kohli's proactive decision-making and aggressive field placements, as well as Rohit's calm demeanor and tactical acumen.

As Shubman Gill embarks on this new chapter, he carries the hopes and dreams of a nation. His humility, vision, and determination to create a positive team environment suggest that he is well-prepared to lead India in the upcoming Test series against England and beyond. While the captaincy may not have been a childhood dream, he is ready to embrace the challenge and carve his own path as a leader.
