In a powerful display of solidarity, Angel City FC, Los Angeles' National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team, donned "Immigrant City Football Club" shirts during their Saturday night home match against the North Carolina Courage. This action was a direct response to recent immigration raids and subsequent protests that have gripped Los Angeles.
The club distributed 10,000 of these specially designed t-shirts to fans entering BMO Stadium. The front of the shirt boldly proclaimed "Immigrant City Football Club," while the back featured the message "Los Angeles is for everyone / Los Ángeles es para todos" in both English and Spanish. Several ACFC players, along with new head coach Alexander Straus, wore the shirts upon arrival at the stadium, making a visible statement of support.
The move comes in the wake of protests triggered by heightened immigration enforcement actions in Los Angeles. Reports indicate that National Guard members and Marine troops have been deployed in the city, and numerous similar protests have erupted across the nation.
Angel City FC had previously released a statement on social media addressing the escalating situation. "We are heartbroken by the fear and uncertainty many in our Los Angeles community are feeling right now," the statement read. "At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging. We know that our city is stronger because of its diversity and the people and families who shape it, love it, and call it home.”
The players' unions for both the NWSL and the WNBA have also voiced their support for those affected by the immigration policies. In a joint statement, the NWSLPA and WNBPA expressed solidarity with families "facing fear, hardship, and uncertainty tied to immigration." The statement continued, "We stand with all people seeking safety, dignity, and opportunity, no matter where they come from or where they hope to go. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We know not every situation is simple. But offering compassion should never be up for debate.”
Angel City's gesture is more than just a symbolic one. It highlights the club's commitment to its community and its recognition of the vital role immigrants play in shaping the city's identity. By using their platform to raise awareness and show support, Angel City FC is taking a stand for inclusivity and sending a message of solidarity to those feeling vulnerable and marginalized. The "Immigrant City Football Club" shirts serve as a visual reminder that Los Angeles is a city built on diversity and that everyone deserves to feel safe and welcome.
