Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed as the new manager of the Italian national team, succeeding Luciano Spalletti. The Italian football federation (FIGC) made the announcement on Sunday, marking a new chapter for the Azzurri. Spalletti was dismissed last Sunday following Italy's 3-0 defeat to Norway in a World Cup qualifying match.

Gattuso, a former AC Milan and Napoli manager, brings a wealth of experience and passion to the role. Known for his tenacious playing style as a midfielder, Gattuso has also carved out a managerial career spanning several clubs. His previous positions include coaching roles at Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa, AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Marseille and Hajduk Split. Most recently, he managed Hajduk Split, leaving by mutual consent at the end of the season.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for Italy, who are looking to rebuild after failing to qualify for the 2024 Euros. The FIGC will be hoping that Gattuso can turn things around and lead the team to future success.

Gattuso's managerial career has been characterized by both successes and challenges. He won the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2020, demonstrating his ability to deliver trophies. However, he has also faced difficulties, such as his departure from Valencia by mutual consent and his brief stint at Fiorentina, where he resigned after just 22 days due to disagreements with the club's board.

His time at Marseille was also short-lived, as he was sacked after five months in charge. Similarly, his tenure at Hajduk Split lasted only one season before he mutually agreed to terminate his contract. Despite these setbacks, Gattuso remains a respected figure in Italian football, and his appointment as national team coach reflects the belief in his potential to lead the Azzurri.

The Italian national team will be Gattuso's first experience as an international coach. As a player, Gattuso earned 73 caps for Italy and was a member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad. His deep understanding of the game and his passion for the national team could prove to be valuable assets in his new role.

Italy's supporters will be hoping that Gattuso can bring stability and success to the national team. With his experience, determination, and knowledge of Italian football, Gattuso is well-placed to take on the challenges that lie ahead.
