Kuldeep Yadav is optimistic that spin will play a significant role in the upcoming Test series against England, which begins in Leeds on June 20. As India embarks on this five-Test series, there's palpable anticipation surrounding the team, especially given the absence of seasoned players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin. India hasn't secured a series win in England since 2007, adding extra weight to this new era.
While the pace bowlers are expected to spearhead the attack, Kuldeep, a left-arm wrist spinner, anticipates that the pitches will offer enough assistance for spin to be a crucial factor. Currently, the Indian squad is engaged in an intra-squad four-day match in Beckenham as part of their final preparations.
Kuldeep emphasized his attacking mindset and the importance of favorable conditions. Speaking at a media conference in Beckenham, he noted that while he doesn't dwell excessively on conditions, any assistance from the pitch is a welcome advantage.
Notably, R Ashwin's retirement has led to Kuldeep spending more time with Ravindra Jadeja, discussing strategies and tactics. He values Jadeja's experience and insights, particularly on how to bowl to English batsmen. Kuldeep views playing alongside Jadeja as an honor, recalling how both Jadeja and Ashwin supported him during his debut.
Former Indian spinner Venkatapathy Raju has also highlighted Kuldeep as a potential surprise match-winner in the series. Raju emphasized the unique challenge Kuldeep's bowling style poses to new batsmen, making him a valuable asset. He believes that as the series progresses and the pitches wear, Kuldeep's ability to exploit footmarks and dry patches will become increasingly important.
Kuldeep's previous Test experience in England was forgettable, with a challenging outing at Lord's in 2018. However, with Ashwin's retirement, there's a greater expectation for Kuldeep to provide that cutting edge to India's spin attack.
Kuldeep acknowledged that the pitches are looking promising for spinners. He observed that while seamers initially found assistance due to moisture, the spinners came into play as the intra-squad game progressed. He's hopeful that the bounce he's observed for spinners will translate into similar conditions during the Test series.
Despite missing Ashwin's presence in the dressing room, Kuldeep is focused on the present and is making the most of his time with Jadeja to fine-tune his strategies.
