Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) delivered a resounding statement of intent at the Club World Cup, dismantling Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their opening match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on Sunday, June 15, 2025. The dominant performance, played in 31 Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) midday California heat, underscored PSG's ambition to add a fourth major trophy to their already impressive haul this season, which includes the Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, and Champions League.

From the outset, PSG asserted control, dictating possession and tempo. Fabian Ruiz, a long-term target for Atletico Madrid, opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a precise strike from just outside the penalty area, beating Jan Oblak with a well-placed shot into the far corner. Atletico struggled to break down the PSG defense and create meaningful chances. Their best opportunity to equalize came in injury time of the first half, but Antoine Griezmann's shot was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Moments later, Vitinha doubled PSG's lead, slipping through the Atletico defense to score.

The second half saw PSG continue their dominance. Although Julian Alvarez had a goal disallowed due to a foul in the build-up, PSG remained firmly in control. Atletico's hopes of a comeback were further diminished when Clement Lenglet received a red card in the 78th minute after a second yellow card. Adding to Atletico's woes, Alexander Sorloth missed an open goal in the 82nd minute, sending the ball over the bar. Senny Mayulu then sealed the victory for PSG with a goal in the 87th minute. Lee Kang-in converted a penalty in added time after a handball from Robin Le Normand, completing the 4-0 rout.

PSG's victory was achieved despite the absence of Ousmane Dembele, who was reportedly sidelined with a quadriceps injury sustained while playing for France on June 6. Luis Enrique, PSG's coach, made only one change to the starting lineup from the Champions League final, with Goncalo Ramos replacing Dembele. Enrique's team selection highlighted PSG's strength in depth, with players like Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia making significant contributions in attack. Vitinha was named Man of the Match for orchestrating PSG's midfield.

Atletico Madrid's coach, Diego Simeone, acknowledged PSG's superiority after the match. Despite the heavy defeat, Simeone maintained that his team had come to compete. The loss was a humbling experience for Atletico, who were making their debut in this format of the FIFA Club World Cup.
