VVS Laxman's presence with the Indian team in England has stirred curiosity, especially with head coach Gautam Gambhir's temporary departure. Gambhir returned to Delhi to be with his mother, who is recovering from a heart attack. He is expected to rejoin the team before the first Test, potentially as early as Monday, June 16th.

Laxman, the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, has been seen around the team, including during the intra-squad match in Beckenham alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Despite his presence, BCCI sources have clarified that Laxman has not been officially assigned any role with the team during this tour.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the purpose of Laxman's visit. One BCCI source indicated that Laxman traveled to London from Lausanne for a different purpose, unrelated to any official assignment with the Indian team. Another source suggested that Laxman might have spoken with coaches and selectors and attended the intra-squad game, emphasizing that he holds no official position. A third source mentioned that Laxman's stop in London was simply to spend time with the team as part of a pre-existing plan after a conference in Switzerland.

Despite the lack of an official role, Laxman's expertise in red-ball cricket and his association with the NCA make him a valuable asset to the Indian cricket system. It is plausible that he will share his insights on playing in English conditions with the coaches and players. His experience as a player in England is extensive, having played 34 first-class matches, including 11 Test matches across three tours in 2002, 2007, and 2011. He also has experience playing for Lancashire in the County Championship.

With Gambhir's return anticipated before the first Test on June 20th in Leeds, Laxman's involvement might be brief, focusing on providing initial guidance and support to the team. His presence during this crucial preparatory phase underscores the BCCI's commitment to ensuring the team is well-prepared for the Test series against England.
