The selection dilemma between Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy for the upcoming England Tests has become a major talking point in Indian cricketing circles. With the first Test match looming, experts and fans alike are weighing in on who should fill the crucial all-rounder's slot in the playing XI. Among those offering their insights is veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, whose opinion carries considerable weight.

According to reports, Harbhajan believes Shardul Thakur holds an edge over Nitish Kumar Reddy for the England Tests. He emphasized the need for a bowler who can contribute with the bat, rather than a batter who can bowl a bit. He stated that India already have batting depth till number 7, and at number 8, they need someone who can bowl and get wickets and also bat a bit. He feels Shardul fits this criteria better than Nitish, who he sees as a proper batsman who can bowl. Harbhajan also acknowledged Gautam Gambhir's presence as a capable coach, expressing confidence that he would make the right decision.

Shardul Thakur has recenty bolstered his case with a century in the intra-squad warm-up match, and his experience of playing in English conditions could work in his favor. In 2021, Shardul played a crucial role in India's success in England, contributing with both bat and ball. In 11 Test matches, Thakur has taken 31 wickets and scored 331 runs.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, while being a promising talent, has less experience in Test cricket, having made his debut in November 2024. However, he impressed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, even notching a century in one of the matches. While Nitish Kumar Reddy is considered a batting all-rounder, his bowling hasn't been utilized much in the IPL.

Other experts also have differing opinions. Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar picked Nitish Kumar Reddy over Shardul Thakur. He considers Nitish a proper batter who can bowl a bit, rather than a bowler who can bat. Robin Uthappa has also backed Nitish Kumar Reddy ahead of Shardul Thakur in the playing XI, stating that Nitish is a proper fast-bowling all-rounder, your fourth fast-bowling option.

Ultimately, the decision rests with the team management, taking into account factors such as current form, the pitch conditions, and the overall team balance. With the first Test just around the corner, the suspense continues to build as fans await the final verdict on who will make the cut.
