Rayan Cherki's recent transfer to Manchester City hasn't cooled his competitive fire; instead, it seems to have stoked it, particularly when it comes to Manchester United. The young French international, fresh off his move from Lyon, has made it abundantly clear that he harbors a strong desire to get revenge on the Red Devils for a painful Europa League defeat.
Cherki's animosity stems from Lyon's dramatic Europa League encounter with Manchester United last season. The tie, particularly the match at Old Trafford, saw United mount a comeback, leaving a lasting impression on the then-Lyon midfielder. Cherki even made a gesture toward the home fans after scoring a goal during the match. Now, as a Manchester City player, he's channeling that frustration into a vow to "kill them" next season.
"I'm here to win all the games," Cherki declared. "I don't like when Manchester United won the game against Lyon because I am a Lyonnais. Now I am waiting for the game [to] kill them."
The 21-year-old is eager to make his mark at Manchester City, not only to erase the memory of that defeat but also to achieve personal ambitions. He has his sights set high, aiming for the Ballon d'Or. Cherki believes that playing for Manchester City provides the perfect platform to achieve such lofty goals. He pointed to Rodri's Ballon d'Or win as evidence that individual success is attainable within the City squad.
Cherki's transfer to Manchester City was finalized on June 10th for a reported 42.5 million euros. He is already training with the team and is expected to make his debut soon in the Club World Cup against Wydad AC.
He also took the opportunity to praise Kevin De Bruyne, while also asserting his own desire to forge his own path at the club. "I am not Kevin De Bruyne," he stated. "He's a legend. I am here to help the team and write my own story." He recognizes the quality within the Manchester City squad, acknowledging that "We have the best players in the world. I work and I wait for my turn.”
Cherki's determination extends beyond domestic rivalries and individual accolades; he wants to win everything with City. He was convinced to join the club after speaking with Pep Guardiola, who clearly communicated his vision for Cherki within the team.
