As Bangladesh prepares to face Sri Lanka in the first Test match in Galle on June 17, 2025, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the availability of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, a pivotal all-rounder in the team. Miraz is currently under medical observation due to a bout of fever and weakness, casting a shadow over Bangladesh's team composition and their aspirations for a strong start in the new ICC World Test Championship (2025-27) cycle.

Miraz's illness has disrupted the team's preparations, as he was unable to participate in Bangladesh's practice session in Galle on Monday. While reports suggest that he has recovered from the infection, he continues to experience fever and weakness, leaving his participation in the crucial Test match in doubt.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged the potential disruption Miraz's absence could cause to the team's balance. "Miraz's condition is better than before, but he is still under observation," Shanto said. "A lot depends on him for tomorrow's combination because, to be honest, he is still not well. His health is improving, but his availability will decide how we shape the playing XI."

The significance of Miraz's role in the team cannot be overstated. As a proficient spin bowler and a valuable contributor in the lower order, his absence would necessitate a reshuffling of the team's dynamics. Galle's pitch is known to favor spinners as the game progresses, making Miraz's bowling prowess all the more crucial.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Miraz's fitness, Shanto emphasized the importance of starting the new WTC cycle on a positive note. He drew confidence from Bangladesh's past successes in Sri Lanka, stating, "It is very important to start the WTC on a positive note. We had good preparation back home, and I hope we can start well. We have good memories in Sri Lanka, which will help, but every series is a fresh start."

Shanto also highlighted the significance of a strong foundation from the top order, expressing optimism in the team's balance and their potential to achieve something special in the series. He acknowledged the challenges posed by Sri Lankan spinners at Galle but pointed out the batting-friendly conditions that typically prevail during the initial stages of a Test match at the venue. "Batting against spin here is challenging, but there are runs to be had early on. We want to capitalize on that," he said.

Bangladesh squad includes Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Shadman Islam, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das, Mahidul Islam, Jaker Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Hasan Murad, Ebadot Hossain, Hasan Mahmud, Nahid Rana and Khaled Ahmed.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has announced their 18-man squad, including six uncapped players, for the Test series. The series will also mark the farewell Test match for Angelo Mathews at Galle. Dhananjaya de Silva will captain the Sri Lankan side.

As both teams gear up for the Test series, the focus remains on Mehidy Hasan Miraz's fitness and Bangladesh's ability to adapt their strategy in his potential absence. The series marks the beginning of a new WTC cycle, adding significance to each match.
