Rob Key, the Managing Director of England Cricket, believes that the upcoming England-India Test series will hinge on the performances of two key players: England's Ben Stokes and India's Jasprit Bumrah. With the first Test set to begin at Headingley on Friday, June 20, Key emphasized the importance of these players being at their best, stating that their performance is a major draw for viewers.

Key acknowledged the significant changes in the Indian squad, with the recent retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Bumrah stands out as one of the remaining frontline figures in the Indian team. The responsibility of captaincy has been handed to Shubman Gill, who will need to deliver strong performances in the challenging English conditions. Former England spinner Graeme Swann believes that despite the absence of Kohli and Sharma, India still possesses the strength to challenge England. Jos Buttler anticipates that Gill will blend the leadership styles of his predecessors while forging his own path.

Stokes, who took over as England captain in 2022 after Joe Root stepped down, has been instrumental in the team's resurgence. Working alongside coach Brendon McCullum, Stokes has promoted a positive and free-flowing approach to Test cricket. However, recent series have seen a refinement of "Bazball" to better suit different match situations. Key noted that Stokes is managing his recovery from recent injuries and may not be able to bowl long spells consistently. He highlighted Stokes' cricketing intelligence and the importance of managing his workload to ensure he is available for pivotal moments in the series.

The five-match series is highly anticipated, especially with the inaugural awarding of a new trophy. Both Bumrah and Stokes will undoubtedly play crucial roles in their respective teams' strategies and chances of success.

Former cricketers have also weighed in on the series. Mathew Hayden believes the northern Test matches will be key, while Dale Steyn predicts England will win 3-2, but not without a significant fight from India. Morne Morkel, India's Bowling Coach, emphasized the need for the Indian team to adapt quickly to the English conditions.
