Chris Wilder's second stint as Sheffield United manager has come to an end after the club failed to secure promotion to the Premier League, losing to Sunderland in the Championship play-off final. The decision, reportedly mutual, concludes a season of high expectations that ultimately fell short of the mark for the Blades.

Wilder's departure follows an end-of-season review by the club's ownership, COH Sports, a US-based consortium that took over the club. While acknowledging Wilder's contributions, particularly his role in rebuilding the squad, the new ownership is keen to implement a new vision for the club, including a data-led approach to recruitment and play. According to Sky Sports News, there was no rift between Wilder and the board.

Sheffield United released a statement confirming the departure, expressing gratitude for Wilder's service and acknowledging his legacy at the club. Wilder's coaches, Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge, will also be leaving.

Wilder's first spell at Sheffield United, from 2016 to 2021, was transformative. He guided the club from League One to the Premier League, achieving a ninth-place finish in the top flight during the 2019-2020 season. This remarkable rise made him a beloved figure among Sheffield United supporters. He returned to Bramall Lane in December 2023, following Paul Heckingbottom's dismissal, with the aim of leading the team back to the Premier League after relegation. Despite a strong season that saw them finish third in the Championship, the play-off final defeat proved to be a turning point.

Sky Sports News reports that Sheffield United is set to appoint Ruben Selles as Wilder's successor. Selles, who was recently sacked by Hull City despite keeping them in the Championship, is considered a promising coach. He previously managed Reading and served as interim boss at Southampton. Interestingly, Selles led Hull City to a 3-0 victory over Wilder's Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in January. Selles has signed a three-year deal with Sheffield United.

Sheffield United's swift move to appoint Selles underscores the ownership's determination to move forward quickly. Selles expressed his excitement about joining the club, emphasizing the importance of embracing data and new technologies while retaining the "football essence." He promised an aggressive, proactive team that aims to be competitive in every game.
