A late surge from Josimar Alcocer propelled Costa Rica to a 2-1 victory over the Dominican Republic in a thrilling CONCACAF Gold Cup match held at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. The win puts Costa Rica in a strong position to advance to the quarter-finals.

The match began with an unexpected turn as the Dominican Republic, defying expectations, took the lead in the 16th minute. Joao Urbaez capitalized on a rebound after a save by Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas, driving the ball into the net from close range. This marked a historic moment for the Dominican Republic, representing their first-ever goal in a major men's football tournament.

Costa Rica responded with determination, and their efforts were rewarded just before halftime. In the 44th minute, Manfred Ugalde expertly converted a penalty kick, leveling the score and shifting the momentum. Ugalde sent Dominican Republic's goalkeeper Xavier Valdez the wrong way, slotting the ball into the left corner of the net.

The second half saw both teams battling fiercely, with neither able to break the deadlock until the final minutes. In the 85th minute, Josimar Alcocer emerged as the hero for Costa Rica. Ugalde, positioned just outside the 18-yard box, delivered a precise pass to Alcocer, who found a narrow opening between the Dominican Republic defenders. Alcocer sprinted towards the goal and skillfully chipped the ball over Valdez, securing a 2-1 lead for Costa Rica.

Alcocer's elation was evident as he removed his shirt in celebration, earning him a yellow card. Shortly after, he was substituted for Guillermo Villalobos. Despite the Dominican Republic's efforts to find an equalizer in the remaining minutes, Costa Rica's defense held firm, securing the victory.

The win places Costa Rica at the top of Group A with six points. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic, with two defeats, face elimination from the tournament. Costa Rica's progress to the quarter-finals is all but secured.
