Leeds, England - Veteran Indian batter Karun Nair, on the cusp of a Test return after an eight-year absence, experienced a worrying moment during a net session ahead of the first Test against England at Headingley. The incident occurred on Wednesday, just two days before the commencement of the five-match series and the start of India's campaign in the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

The 33-year-old, who is widely anticipated to fill a crucial middle-order slot, was struck on the ribs by a rising delivery from pacer Prasidh Krishna. The blow visibly discomforted Nair, who had to pause his session. Krishna immediately checked on his teammate. Reports indicate the ball hit Nair on his midsection, and the area turned red due to the impact.

Thankfully, the injury appears to be minor. Nair quickly recovered and resumed batting, alleviating serious concerns. Following his batting session, he was seen pointing to the affected area while sharing a light moment with the support staff and team members, further suggesting that the injury was not severe. Physios also attended to him, and after a check-up, he was seen laughing with teammates.

Nair's potential comeback to the Test side has been a major talking point, marking a remarkable return after being sidelined since 2017. His inclusion in the squad follows a stellar domestic season, where he demonstrated strong form and consistency. He played a pivotal role in Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy triumph and recently scored a double century in the unofficial Test against England Lions, solidifying his claim for a spot in the playing XI.

However, despite resuming his session and the positive signs, Nair's performance in the nets raised some concerns. He reportedly struggled against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, displaying hesitancy against deliveries outside the off stump. His difficulties extended to spin bowling, with Ravindra Jadeja dismissing him once. Nair was also observed in conversation with batting coach Shitanshu Kotak, seemingly making technical adjustments.

With the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Nair is expected to shoulder significant responsibility in a relatively inexperienced batting lineup. He is likely to bat at No. 3, with Shubman Gill, the new captain, taking Kohli's place at No. 4. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal are expected to open. Nair has previously played county cricket for Northampshire and is familiar with English conditions.

While the blow from Krishna initially sparked worry, the fact that Nair continued batting and was later seen in good spirits suggests the injury is unlikely to prevent him from playing in the first Test.
