Hussain and Atherton Predict England Victory: India's Lack of Experience Will Lead to Series Loss

The highly anticipated five-match Test series between India and England is set to commence on June 20, 2025, at Headingley, Leeds, marking the start of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle (2025-2027). This series is particularly significant as it sees both teams in a state of transition. India will be without their veteran duo, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have retired from Test cricket, while England is navigating its own transitional phase under the leadership of Ben Stokes.

Ahead of the series, several prominent voices in the cricketing world have offered their predictions, adding to the excitement and tension. Among them, former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton have weighed in with their assessments of India's chances.

Nasser Hussain has confidently dismissed India's prospects in the series. Highlighting England's strong home record and the absence of experienced players like Kohli and Sharma as crucial factors, Hussain predicts a 3-1 victory for England. In his column for Mail Sport, he wrote, "England have a very good record at home, and India will miss the runs and experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. It's a hard one to call, but I think home advantage will swing it England's way, and I'm going for 3-1." Hussain believes that Shubman Gill, leading the side for the first time in Tests, will struggle against a formidable England team. He also suggested that India's aging batters might pose a challenge.

Michael Atherton also believes that England will have the upper hand due to their home advantage. He pointed to England's resurgence under Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, emphasizing their aggressive "Bazball" approach. Atherton stated, "I think England are favourites to beat India at home," in a Sky Sports Podcast. While acknowledging India's potential, Atherton seems confident in England's ability to capitalize on their home conditions.

However, not all experts share the same sentiment. Matthew Hayden, for instance, has expressed skepticism about England's bowling attack, noting the challenges posed by injuries and retirements. He believes that if India can secure a win in a northern Test, it could shift the series in their favor. Monty Panesar has also highlighted the importance of pitch conditions, suggesting that green pitches would favor England, while flat surfaces would benefit India.

Graeme Swann has stirred controversy by labeling the series as "the perfect warm-up" for the upcoming Ashes, which has drawn criticism. He emphasized that India are without their superstars and that England's bowlers can exploit home conditions effectively. Swann predicts a 4-1 or, at best, a 3-2 win for England.

Despite the predictions, the series promises to be a closely contested affair. India's pace attack, potentially featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, could pose a significant threat to England's batting lineup in conducive conditions. The performance of India's younger players and their ability to adapt to the English conditions will also be crucial.

Ultimately, the series will depend on various factors, including team composition, player form, pitch conditions, and the ability of both sides to seize crucial moments. While experts have offered their opinions, the outcome remains uncertain, and fans can look forward to an enthralling battle between two of cricket's powerhouses.
