England captain Ben Stokes has expressed his optimism regarding Jofra Archer's potential return to the Test squad for the ongoing series against India. Archer, who burst onto the international cricket scene in 2019, has been plagued by injuries over the past several years, with his last Test appearance dating back to February 2021.

Stokes revealed that Archer is extremely keen to rejoin the England team, even sending messages expressing his desire to participate in the recent Test match against Zimbabwe. However, Stokes urged caution, emphasizing the importance of a carefully managed return to avoid any setbacks.

Archer's return has been delayed due to a thumb injury sustained earlier this year, but he is scheduled to play for Sussex in their County Championship match against Durham this weekend. If he emerges from the match fit, he could be considered for selection for the second Test against India at Edgbaston, or the subsequent match at Lord's.

England has developed a detailed plan for Archer's reintroduction to Test cricket. This plan includes appearances in second-team games for Sussex to build up his workload before potentially joining the Test squad. England selector Luke Wright mentioned that Archer is progressing well and is expected to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test against India. If all goes according to plan, Archer could be available for selection for the second Test.

Stokes acknowledged the significance of Archer's potential return, particularly given the relative inexperience of the current bowling line-up. With a busy schedule ahead, including the India series and the Ashes, having Archer back in the team would be a major boost for England.

The England management is keen to avoid rushing Archer back into Test cricket to ensure his long-term fitness. Stokes indicated that if Archer's return is delayed until next summer to prolong his career by another two or three years, that would be the preferred approach.

While Archer's possible return date remains uncertain, the fact that a plan is in place and he is nearing full fitness is encouraging news for England fans. His raw pace and ability to bowl long spells would provide a significant lift to the bowling attack.

In Archer's absence, other players have stepped up, but his presence would undoubtedly add a different dimension to the team. His comeback would not only bolster England's chances in the upcoming series but also provide a significant psychological boost to the entire squad. The return of Jofra Archer would be a welcome sight for cricket fans around the globe.
