As Shubman Gill embarks on his journey as India's Test captain, he carries with him the hopes of a nation and the wisdom of his predecessors. Thrust into the leadership role following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gill, at just 25 years old, is tasked with ushering in a new era for Indian cricket. The first Test of the five-match series against England at Headingley marks not only the beginning of a new World Test Championship cycle but also the dawn of Gill's captaincy.

Ahead of this significant challenge, Gill has received encouragement and advice from senior teammate KL Rahul. Recognizing the importance of allowing a new leader to find his own footing, Rahul's message to Gill was simple yet profound: "You need to give people space." This sentiment reflects an understanding that true leadership involves fostering an environment where individuals can trust their instincts and grow into their roles.

"I reached out to Shubman the minute the team was announced, and when he was announced (as) the captain. (I told him) You will always find me around, any help, any guidance, if you need someone to share something with or talk to, I'm always there. But I believe you need to give people their space to really follow their gut instinct. If they need help, I'm always there," Rahul told Sony Sports Network.

Rahul, who himself has captained India in Test matches, is expected to be a key part of the leadership group, offering support and guidance to Gill as he navigates the complexities of captaincy. This mentorship will be invaluable as Gill seeks to balance his responsibilities as a leader with his role as a top-order batsman.

Gill acknowledged the magnitude of the honor bestowed upon him, stating, "Yes, definitely, it's sunk in. It's the biggest honour a player can get. Captaining the country in Test cricket is something not many get the opportunity to do. I'm very excited about it." Despite the excitement, Gill remains focused on the task at hand, aiming to approach his batting with the same mindset as always, without the added pressure of captaincy weighing him down. "When I go out there to bat, I want to think like a batter-not a captain. That can add pressure. I want to be the best batter in this…"

The series against England presents a formidable challenge for Gill and the Indian team. With several senior players now retired, India will look to Gill, Rishabh Pant (named vice-captain), and other experienced players like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja to step up and lead the way. As Gill steps onto the field at Headingley, he carries not only the weight of expectations but also the support and encouragement of his teammates, ready to carve his own chapter in Indian cricket history. His journey begins with the simple yet powerful advice: "Give people space."
