Rishabh Pant, the Indian wicket-keeper batsman, has been officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds. The incident occurred during England's first innings and relates to showing dissent at an umpire's decision.

Specifically, Pant was found to have violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to "showing dissent at an Umpire's decision during an International Match.” In addition to the reprimand, one demerit point has been added to Pant's disciplinary record. This was his first offense in the last 24 months.

The incident unfolded during the 61st over of England's innings. Pant was seen engaging in a discussion with the umpires, Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, regarding the condition of the ball. Apparently, Pant was unhappy with the ball and wanted it changed. However, after inspecting the ball with a ball gauge, the umpires determined that there was no issue and refused to replace it. In response, Pant expressed his displeasure by throwing the ball on the ground in front of the umpires. This action was deemed to be a sign of dissent, leading to the charge from the ICC. The charges were brought forward by the on-field umpires, as well as third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Mike Burns.

Following the incident, there was no need for a formal disciplinary hearing. Pant admitted to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

The incident sparked debate among cricket commentators. Some, like Ravi Shastri, suggested that Pant's frustration stemmed from a desire to change the momentum of the game. Others, like Mark Butcher, felt that Pant's actions were unnecessary and potentially disrespectful to the umpire.

Pant's conduct also drew boos from the crowd at Headingley. It remains to be seen whether this incident will affect his approach in future matches.
