England secured a memorable victory against India in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, chasing down a target of 371 with five wickets to spare. The win, achieved on the fifth day of the match, was largely thanks to a magnificent century from Ben Duckett and a composed half-century from Joe Root.

Duckett's innings was the cornerstone of England's chase. The left-handed opener displayed an impressive blend of aggression and composure, taking the attack to the Indian bowlers from the outset. He reached his century in just 121 balls, putting India under immense pressure. His innings included 21 boundaries and an audacious reverse-swept six off Ravindra Jadeja, showcasing his confidence and innovative approach.

Duckett and Zak Crawley laid a solid foundation with an opening stand of 188 runs, effectively extinguishing India's hopes of a final-day victory. Crawley, playing a more restrained role, contributed a well-paced 65 before falling to Prasidh Krishna. Krishna also dismissed Ollie Pope in quick succession, giving India a glimmer of hope.

However, Duckett continued his onslaught, reaching 149 before being dismissed by Shardul Thakur. Thakur further compounded England's woes by dismissing Harry Brook off the very next ball, threatening to shift the momentum. But Joe Root, known for his calmness and experience, steadied the ship.

Root, along with captain Ben Stokes, ensured that England remained on course. Stokes contributed a valuable 32 before being dismissed by Jadeja, but Root remained solid, anchoring the innings and guiding England closer to the target. He ultimately finished with an unbeaten 53, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure. Jamie Smith supported Root with an unbeaten 44.

India's bowlers struggled to contain England's aggressive batting approach. Jasprit Bumrah, India's pace spearhead, bowled probing spells but lacked consistent support. Prasidh Krishna found some rhythm in the second session, but it was not enough to derail England's chase. Shardul Thakur's double strike provided a brief moment of excitement, but Root and Smith ensured that England remained in control.

England's victory was a testament to their "Bazball" approach, characterized by aggressive batting and a positive mindset. Duckett's century exemplified this approach, setting the tone for England's successful chase. The win gives England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series and marks only the second time India have lost a Test match while defending a 350-plus total in the fourth innings. The previous instance was also against England in 2022.
