Garrett Mitchell's Shoulder Injury Requires Surgery: Expected Recovery Time Between Eight and Ten Weeks

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell is facing another setback in his promising career, as shoulder surgery has been recommended following an injury sustained during a rehab assignment. The news comes as a significant blow to Mitchell, who has struggled with injuries since making his major league debut in 2022.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy announced Tuesday that team physician William Raasch advised Mitchell to undergo surgery on his injured left shoulder. The injury occurred while Mitchell was playing for Triple-A Nashville, diving back into first base. This is particularly disheartening, as Mitchell was nearing a return from an oblique strain that had sidelined him since April 26.

Mitchell is seeking a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, who performed surgery on the same shoulder two years ago. The possibility of surgery looms large, with Murphy stating that it would likely sideline Mitchell for an additional eight to ten weeks.

The recurring shoulder issues are a major concern for Mitchell and the Brewers. In 2023, a torn labrum in his shoulder limited him to just 19 games. Now, it appears some anchors from that previous surgery have been dislodged, according to Dr. Raasch.

"That kid's been through a lot — four years of trying to make a whole season," Murphy said. "My heart goes out to him and his family. It's really, really tough.”

Prior to his latest stint on the injured list, Mitchell had played 25 games for Milwaukee this season, hitting .206 with three RBIs. When healthy, the 26-year-old has shown glimpses of his potential, batting .254 with 13 home runs, 40 RBIs, and 23 steals in 141 career regular-season games. His ability to contribute both offensively and defensively has made him a key part of the Brewers' plans when available.

The Brewers are currently managing a number of injuries to key players. Center fielder Blake Perkins is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville this week as he recovers from a shin fracture sustained in spring training. Right-hander Brandon Woodruff, who underwent shoulder surgery after the 2023 season, threw four simulated innings against Brewers hitters on June 23 and is expected to either have one more simulated game or a rehab start before returning.

The Brewers' current roster is demonstrating resilience. In recent weeks, the team has seen improved performance from hitters like Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich. Isaac Collins has also stepped up, receiving increased playing time due to Mitchell's absence.

The Brewers' organization and fans alike are hoping for a positive outcome from Mitchell's second opinion. His talent and potential are undeniable, and a successful recovery would provide a significant boost to the team.
