Rodri: Injury Recovery Will Be Lengthy; Manchester City Midfielder Acknowledges He Is Not Yet at Peak Form

Rodri, Manchester City's midfield linchpin and reigning Ballon d'Or winner, has acknowledged that he faces a significant journey to regain his peak form following a prolonged absence due to a serious knee injury. The Spanish international, who endured a frustrating 2024-25 season, missing a substantial portion of it after being injured last September, is managing expectations as he works his way back to full fitness.

Rodri's injury, an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) issue sustained in a match against Arsenal, sidelined him for eight months, a period that saw Manchester City struggle to maintain their usual dominance. The 29-year-old made his return to the pitch in May, featuring as a substitute in the team's Premier League game against Bournemouth. His comeback has continued with further appearances off the bench in the Club World Cup, against Wydad AC and Al Ain.

Despite these appearances, Rodri remains realistic about his current condition. "I know it's still going to be months until I reach my level but I'm so happy," he stated, emphasizing the long road ahead. His absence was keenly felt by City, who, despite eventually securing a third-place finish in the Premier League, fell short of their usual title-winning form, after winning an historic four titles in a row in the preceding four campaigns. Moreover, they exited the UEFA Champions League prematurely.

Rodri's importance to Manchester City cannot be overstated. Statistics highlight the team's significant drop in performance when he is not in the lineup. A win rate of 74% with Rodri contrasts sharply with a 61% win rate without him. His ability to control the midfield, break up opposition attacks, and dictate the tempo of the game is irreplaceable. The team's struggles in his absence underscored just how vital he is to their success.

Speaking about his recovery, Rodri conveyed a positive mindset. "I feel very, very strong, to be honest. The (recovery) process was long, but I was taking my time," he said. "The most important thing was to keep focused and be strong, not be sad or whatever. One day I would come back and this day has finally come."

Rodri's return to fitness is a welcome boost for Manchester City as they look to compete on all fronts. However, both the player and the club are aware that patience will be key. Rushing him back too quickly could risk re-injury and further setbacks. The focus will be on gradually increasing his playing time and allowing him to regain his sharpness and match fitness.

Prior to his injury, Rodri had been vocal about the demanding schedules placed on top-level players, even hinting at the possibility of strike action if concerns about burnout were not addressed. While the issue of fixture congestion remains a concern, Rodri is now focused on his own recovery and contributing to the team's success. "Listen, it's not my decision," he said regarding the scheduling demands. "I'm here and excited to play."

As Rodri continues his journey back to his best, his presence in the squad provides a significant lift to Manchester City. His experience, leadership, and exceptional quality will be invaluable as they navigate the challenges ahead. While it may take time for him to reach his peak, his commitment and determination are clear, and his return is a major positive for the club.
