With the second Test against England fast approaching on July 2nd in Birmingham, the Indian team management faces a crucial decision: who will replace Jasprit Bumrah if the premier pacer is rested? Bumrah's workload is being carefully managed throughout the five-Test series, and reports suggest he might sit out the Edgbaston match to ensure his fitness for the remainder of the tour, potentially with an eye on the Lord's Test. While Bumrah's absence would undoubtedly weaken the bowling attack, India has a few promising options to consider.

Several names have emerged as potential replacements, each bringing a unique set of skills to the table. Among the frontrunners are Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. Akash Deep has already gained international experience, featuring in seven Tests and claiming 15 wickets. His debut against England in Ranchi showcased his potential, particularly in conditions that favor seam and swing. Given the expected helpful conditions in England, Akash Deep's disciplined line, length, and ability to generate bounce and movement could make him an effective replacement for Bumrah.

Arshdeep Singh presents a different dimension to the Indian pace attack. A consistent performer in domestic red-ball cricket, Arshdeep is yet to make his Test debut, but he has impressed in County cricket, demonstrating control and swing, especially in seaming conditions. While he might not possess Bumrah's raw pace, Arshdeep's ability to move the ball both ways makes him a valuable asset, especially in the early sessions at Edgbaston. In 21 first-class games, he has picked up 66 wickets, highlighting his wicket-taking abilities. Furthermore, Arshdeep's left-arm angle would add variety to the bowling attack, potentially disrupting the English batsmen.

Another option that the team management might consider is Nitish Kumar Reddy. Reddy is a genuine all-rounder. While he didn't get many opportunities with the ball during the tour of Australia, he impressed with the bat. His ability to swing the red ball and break partnerships makes him a tempting option, especially if India wants to bolster its batting depth. However, including Reddy might necessitate a reshuffle in the team composition, potentially requiring the dropping of Shardul Thakur and the inclusion of a specialist pacer like Arshdeep Singh or Akash Deep to maintain a balanced attack.

The decision of whom to pick as Bumrah's replacement will depend on several factors, including the pitch conditions, the team's balance, and the individual form of the players. The team management will need to carefully assess these aspects before finalizing the playing XI for the second Test. Ultimately, while replacing a world-class bowler like Jasprit Bumrah is no easy task, India has a pool of talented players who are capable of stepping up and making a significant contribution.
