Manchester City's midfield linchpin, Rodri, has recently made his return to the pitch after an eight-month absence due to a serious knee injury. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who was awarded the 2024 Ballon d'Or shortly after sustaining the injury, has been gradually reintroduced to the team, featuring in the Club World Cup.

Rodri's injury occurred during a Premier League match against Arsenal in September of last year, cutting short what had been a sustained period of excellent form. The injury required surgery and sidelined him for a significant portion of the 2024-2025 season. Manchester City undeniably felt his absence, ultimately relinquishing their Premier League title after four consecutive wins and failing to make a significant impact in other competitions.

Following a carefully managed recovery and rehabilitation program, Rodri made his comeback in City's penultimate Premier League game against Bournemouth. Since then, he has made substitute appearances in the Club World Cup matches.

Manager Pep Guardiola has emphasized the importance of managing Rodri's return with caution, balancing the need for match rhythm with ensuring a full recovery. Guardiola has alluded to Rodri wanting more playing time. Speaking after the Juventus game, Guardiola said he didn't expect him to play as many minutes after 45, "but he said, 'A few more', and the game was good in the second-half with control. He'll be ready for the next one.”

Rodri himself has acknowledged that it will take time to return to his peak fitness and performance levels. "I know it's still going to be months until I reach my level but I'm so happy," he stated. Despite this, he expressed his excitement to be back on the field and contributing to the team. "I feel very good and very happy to be here. It's an amazing tournament to start again to play football," Rodri said. "I'm really excited to join the team again."

Rodri's return is a welcome boost for Manchester City, as they aim to regain their dominance in both domestic and international competitions. His presence in midfield provides the team with stability, control, and a driving force that was noticeably missing during his absence. His return also brings a renewed sense of optimism and determination to the City squad.

While it may take some time for Rodri to reach his previous heights, his commitment to regaining his best form is clear. As he continues to integrate back into the team, Manchester City fans will be eagerly anticipating his return to full strength, hoping he can once again lead the team to success.
