The Indian cricket team has begun preparations for the crucial second Test against England in Birmingham, but concerns have emerged regarding the availability of their pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah. According to reports, Bumrah did not participate in the team's first net session at Edgbaston, raising questions about his fitness and workload management.

India is aiming to bounce back in the five-match series after a disappointing five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley. Bumrah's absence from the net session has intensified speculation about whether he will feature in the second Test, which begins on July 2.

While the rest of the Indian squad underwent a full-fledged training session, Bumrah was present at the ground but did not engage in any on-field activity. Prasidh Krishna was also absent from bowling drills. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was observed having extended conversations with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep. Mohammed Siraj spent a considerable amount of time honing his batting skills.

Prior to the series, it was indicated that Bumrah would likely play only three of the five Tests to manage his workload effectively. Following the loss in Leeds, Gambhir reiterated that Bumrah's participation would be determined on a game-by-game basis, emphasizing the importance of workload management. With a short turnaround between the second Test at Edgbaston (July 2-6) and the third at Lord's (July 10-14), there are suggestions that Bumrah might be rested for the Birmingham Test.

Bumrah's absence would undoubtedly be a significant setback for India, as he is the team's premier fast bowler. In the first Test, he bowled a demanding 44 overs and secured a five-wicket haul in the first innings, showcasing his importance to the team's bowling attack. While Bumrah's form is not a concern, the team management is wary of his workload, especially considering his history of back injuries.

If Bumrah is indeed rested, India will need to make changes to their bowling lineup. Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep are potential replacements. Arshdeep offers a left-arm option, while Akash Deep has been impressive in domestic cricket. The team might also consider including a spinner like Kuldeep Yadav to add variety to the attack.

While there has been no official confirmation regarding Bumrah's availability, sources suggest that his absence is primarily due to workload management. The team management understands the significance of keeping him fit for the remainder of the series, especially with crucial matches coming up.

Meanwhile, England has announced their squad for the second Test, with express pacer Jofra Archer making a comeback after four years. England leads the series 1-0 after their victory in the first Test.
