Joe Wahlund, born on April 20, 2007, in Karlstad, Sweden, is a defenseman eligible for the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Currently playing for Färjestad BK J20 in the Nationell league, Wahlund is a left-shooting defenseman with a solid frame, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 190 pounds.

Wahlund is considered a two-way defenseman who demonstrates hockey smarts in all zones. While he may not be the flashiest player, he consistently contributes on both sides of the ice. Scouts note his sneaky offensive potential, stemming from his playmaking abilities and hockey sense. He activates frequently and intelligently, leading to concrete results.

In the 2024-25 season, Wahlund recorded 20 points (4 goals, 16 assists) in 43 games in the J20 Nationell. He also shone at the World Junior A Challenge, where he tallied six points in five games, topping all draft-eligible defensemen in the tournament. Additionally, he participated in the U18 World Championship, contributing two points in six games.

Wahlund's strengths lie in his anticipation and positioning, particularly in the neutral and defensive zones. He excels at breaking up passing plays and transitioning his team to offense. His disruptive presence in the slot and good gap control make him a valuable asset on the penalty kill. He is rarely beaten by opposing forwards and displays good aggressiveness.

NHL Central Scouting ranked Wahlund 53rd among European skaters. Other rankings include 168th by Future Considerations and 239th by McKeen's Hockey. Some scouts believe Wahlund's skills might warrant more attention than he has received. While some view him as a late-round prospect, his fluid skating and physical play could make him an interesting project pick. However, one scout noted that Wahlund can be "hot and cold," prone to occasional mistakes, and was not entirely convinced he would be drafted.

Throughout his career, Wahlund has achieved several highlights, including a silver medal at the U18 World Junior Championship and a bronze medal at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
