Indian badminton witnessed a surge of talent at the 2025 US Open Super 300 Tournament, held at the Mid-America Centre in Iowa, United States, as Tanvi Sharma and Ayush Shetty both advanced to the semifinals.
Sixteen-year-old Tanvi Sharma continued her impressive run, securing her maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 semifinal berth. She achieved this feat by defeating her higher-ranked Malaysian opponent, Karupathevan Letshanaa, with a convincing 21-13, 21-16 victory in 33 minutes. Tanvi's performance at the US Open has been particularly notable for her high-quality drop shots from the back court. In the semifinals, Tanvi is set to face Polina Buhrova of Ukraine, who previously upset third-seeded Sung Shuo-yun of Chinese Taipei.
Ayush Shetty also displayed remarkable form, progressing to his third semifinal of the year on the BWF World Tour 2025, following his previous appearances at the Orleans Masters and Taipei Open. In the quarterfinal, Ayush defeated junior world champion Kuo Kuan Lin of Chinese Taipei in straight games, 22-20, 21-9. This victory propels him into a challenging semifinal match against the top-seeded Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei. Ayush will need to draw confidence from his previous strong performances this year, despite having been defeated by Chen at the Taipei Open.
While Tanvi Sharma and Ayush Shetty celebrated their semifinal entries, the men's doubles pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi faced defeat in their quarterfinal match. They were overcome by Chiang Chien and Wei Wu Hsuan-yi of Chinese Taipei with a score of 9-21, 19-21.
The focus remains on Tanvi and Ayush as they prepare for their semifinal matches. Tanvi's agility and skillful drop shots, combined with Ayush's determination and previous experience in high-pressure situations, could pave the way for further success in the tournament.
