With the 37th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Washington Capitals have selected Swedish center Milton Gästrin from Modo. Gästrin, who turned 18 earlier this month, is a 6'1", 185-pound two-way forward.

Gästrin was projected by some to potentially sneak into the later stages of the first round. However, D.C. capitalized on the opportunity to select him at pick number 37.

Analysts from the NHL Network describe Gästrin as a player with "no holes in his game". His versatility allows him to play either center or wing. Gästrin is a reliable, consistent player with a high hockey IQ and a simple but effective game. He demonstrates strong play-driving abilities, capable of making smart passes, transitioning the puck effectively, and creating space for his linemates. Furthermore, he possesses a powerful and accurate shot.

Born in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, Gästrin hails from the same town that produced hockey legends such as Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Peter Forsberg, and Victor Hedman. He is a strong skater with demonstrated leadership abilities. While not considered elite in any single aspect of the game, he performs many facets of the game well.

Gästrin is viewed as a low-risk, potentially high-reward player, fitting the Capitals' preference for developing versatile young talents. While he may not immediately impact the NHL, further development with Modo or in Hershey could mold him into a solid middle-line center for the Capitals. Some scouts believe Gästrin could reach his ceiling as a second-line center in the NHL.

It is also worth noting that the Washington Capitals have a history of success with Swedish centers, most notably Nicklas Backstrom. While it is unfair to place similar expectations on Gästrin, his development will be closely watched with considerable interest.

The Capitals entered the 2025 NHL Draft with five picks in the first five rounds. General Manager Brian MacLellan and his staff are looking to add to a prospect pool that is continuing to improve.
