The Detroit Red Wings have acquired goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for goaltender Petr Mrazek, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2027 fourth-round pick. There will be no salary retained in the deal.

Gibson, 31, has spent his entire 12-year NHL career with the Anaheim Ducks. During that time, he has played in 506 games, recording a 204-217-63 record with a 2.89 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage, and 24 shutouts. In 2015-16, Gibson won the Jennings Trophy. In 2025, Gibson went 11-11-2 with a 2.77 goals against average and .911 save percentage. He is the Ducks' all-time leader in saves. Gibson has also been selected to three NHL All-Star Games and has received Vezina Trophy votes in 2016 and 2019. He has two seasons remaining on his contract with an annual average value of $6.4 million.

Mrazek, 33, is heading to his sixth different team. He was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In March of 2025, the Red Wings acquired Mrazek and Craig Smith from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Joe Veleno. Mrazek has appeared in 428 career games, posting a 180-176-40 record with a 2.85 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage, and 26 shutouts. In 2025, he went 12-21-2 with the Chicago Blackhawks and Red Wings. In five games with the Red Wings, he went 2-2-0 with a .902 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average.

The Red Wings have been looking to solidify their goaltending situation for a number of years. With this move, the Red Wings now have a goaltending tandem of Cam Talbot and John Gibson. The team hopes that Gibson can stabilize the crease and help them take the next step in making the playoffs.

The Ducks, on the other hand, are continuing their youth movement, with 24-year-old Lukas Dostal expected to take over as the full-time starter. The team also cleared over $2 million in cap space with this deal.
