Keshav Maharaj has etched his name in South African cricket history during the first Test match against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. While leading the Proteas as stand-in captain, Maharaj achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first South African spinner to take 200 Test wickets.

Maharaj reached the 200-wicket mark on the second day of the Test, dismissing Craig Ervine. This accomplishment positions him as the ninth South African bowler overall to reach this milestone in Test cricket. Cricket South Africa celebrated Maharaj's achievement with a post on X, recognizing his "monumental milestone" and his place in the history books.

The left-arm spinner made his Test debut in 2016 against Australia. Since then, he has become a regular feature in the team. Before his international career, Maharaj proved himself in first-class cricket, amassing 629 wickets.

Maharaj's achievement adds another feather to his cap. In August 2024, he became South Africa's most successful Test spinner when he surpassed Hugh Tayfield's 64-year-old record. By dismissing Jayden Seales in the second Test against the West Indies, Maharaj secured his 171st Test wicket, surpassing Tayfield.

Throughout his career, Maharaj has achieved several notable feats. In March 2017, he took his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests against New Zealand. In 2018, he recorded his best Test bowling figures with 9/129 against Sri Lanka, the second-best figures by a South African in a Test innings. In June 2021, Maharaj became the second South African to take a Test hat-trick, accomplishing this against the West Indies.

Beyond his individual records, Maharaj has contributed significantly to the South African team. He was part of the South African team that won the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final. Due to Temba Bavuma's injury, Maharaj was named captain for the Zimbabwe tour. He has captained in 5 matches and won 4 of them. He is also the vice-captain of the side in limited overs cricket.

Maharaj's journey to success is marked by dedication and hard work. He began his career at the Dolphins and represented KwaZulu-Natal at various age levels. According to Mduduzi Mbatha, assistant coach at Hollywoodbets Dolphins, Maharaj is known for his world-class preparation and willingness to learn.

As South Africa begins their World Test Championship title defense, Maharaj's role is set to be critical. With a Test series in Pakistan and India on the horizon, his skills as a versatile spinner will be essential. Keshav Maharaj's recent achievements solidify his position as a key player in South African cricket and a record-breaker in the realm of Test cricket.
