The Edmonton Oilers are navigating a busy offseason with key decisions to be made regarding player contracts, potential trades, and bolstering their roster for another Stanley Cup run. Here's a breakdown of the latest surrounding Corey Perry, trade talks, and Evan Bouchard.

Corey Perry's Future in Edmonton

Corey Perry, a veteran forward, has expressed his desire to re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers for the upcoming season. However, negotiations have been challenging due to the Oilers' tight salary cap situation. Perry, who will be 40 years old, is reportedly seeking a two-year deal in the range of $2 million to $2.5 million per season.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun noted that while Perry hopes to return to Edmonton, finding common ground on a deal has been difficult, raising the possibility of Perry entering free agency. Oilers insider Bob Stauffer questioned whether the team could justify spending that much on Perry, considering the need to sign Evan Bouchard and make decisions about Connor McDavid's long-term future.

Despite averaging under 12 minutes per game in the regular season, Perry contributed 19 goals and 30 points in 81 games, and added 10 goals in the playoffs. His veteran presence, leadership, and playoff experience are considered valuable assets. Perry himself has stated his desire to stay in Edmonton, expressing optimism about the team's future.

Trade Talks and Potential Acquisitions

General Manager Stan Bowman has indicated a willingness to make moves to improve the team, particularly in the middle-six forward positions and goaltending. Viktor Arvidsson, who had a disappointing season after being acquired last year, is reportedly on the trading block. Several teams, including the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins, could be potential trade destinations for Arvidsson.

The Oilers are also reportedly looking to upgrade their goaltending situation. While Stuart Skinner is expected to remain with the team, the Oilers may explore options to bring in another goalie through a trade. Names like Ilya Sorokin have been mentioned, although a trade for him may be unrealistic.

Evan Bouchard's Contract Extension

Re-signing Evan Bouchard is a top priority for the Oilers. The 25-year-old defenseman has become a key offensive contributor, especially on the power play. Over the last two seasons, Bouchard has recorded 32 goals and 149 points in 163 games.

Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers and Bouchard are nearing an agreement on a four-year deal with an average annual value of around $9.5 million. While earlier projections had Bouchard potentially earning over $10 million per season on a long-term deal, a shorter-term contract could lower the annual cap hit. A shorter term deal carries the risk of Bouchard becoming an unrestricted free agent sooner, but it provides the Oilers with some short-term cap flexibility.

Locking up Bouchard is considered crucial for the Oilers' long-term success. Connor McDavid has emphasized Bouchard's importance to the team and the need to get a deal done.
