Patrick Kane, the dynamic winger, has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings. The deal, announced on Monday, keeps the three-time Stanley Cup champion in Detroit for another season.

The contract has a base salary of $3 million, but Kane could earn up to $4 million more in performance bonuses, potentially bringing the total value to $7 million.

Kane, 36, proved to be a valuable asset for the Red Wings in the 2024-25 season. In 72 games, he scored 21 goals and contributed 38 assists, totaling 59 points. He ranked among the team's top players in several categories, including goals, assists, points, power-play goals, power-play points, game-winning goals, and shots on goal. His contributions were key to the Red Wings' offensive efforts.

"I've really enjoyed my time here and I think it is a great place for me," Kane said at Red Wings breakup day. "This organization has been great for me, and I think there's some mutual interest in doing it again next season".

Before joining the Red Wings, Kane had a storied career with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he won three Stanley Cups (2010, 2013, and 2015). He also played for the New York Rangers. Throughout his NHL career, which began in 2007-08, Kane has amassed 1,343 points (492 goals and 851 assists) in 1,302 games. Among active players, he trails only Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, and Evgeni Malkin in total points.

Kane's individual accolades include the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year (2008), the Hart Trophy (MVP) and Ted Lindsay Award (MVP as voted by the NHL Players' Association) in 2016, and the Art Ross Trophy for leading the league in scoring in the same season. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2013. In 2017, he was named one of the NHL's 100 Greatest Players.

The Buffalo native has continued to play at a high level following hip resurfacing surgery, a procedure that only a couple of other NHL players have returned from. In his first season with the Red Wings, he was nearly a point-a-game player.

By re-signing with the Red Wings, Kane aims to help the team return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
