Neeraj Chopra, India's celebrated javelin thrower and Olympic champion, recently sparked a delightful exchange with former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee. Chopra, in an interview, suggested that Lee's athleticism and explosive action during his cricketing prime could have translated well into javelin throwing.

Chopra revealed he had "heard that Brett Lee was a javelin thrower". He added, "I think he could throw the javelin well, especially when he was in his peak years". Chopra also expressed interest in trying javelin with Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah, acknowledging the differences and potential synergies between bowling and javelin throwing. "While bowling and javelin are both throws, they are very different. I would like to learn from Bumrah," he stated.

Lee, known for his speed and agility on the cricket field, responded to Chopra's comments with characteristic humility and humor. Acknowledging Chopra's statement, Lee admitted on social media that he did indeed try his hand at javelin during his school days. "I did throw the javelin back at my schooling days, but nowhere near what Neeraj does & continues to do," Lee tweeted. He also noted the strain javelin throwing can place on the elbow. Showing his admiration for the Olympic champion, Lee added, "I have however admired what this fine athlete can do and wish him well".

The exchange occurred as Chopra prepared to compete in the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025. This event marks India's first-ever international javelin competition, scheduled for July 5th at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Originally slated for May 24 in Panchkula, the event was postponed due to military tensions and relocated due to lighting limitations that affected live telecast capabilities.

In addition to praising Lee's potential as a javelin thrower, Chopra was also asked which cricketer's superpower he would like to have. He chose Sachin Tendulkar, citing Tendulkar's ability to handle pressure and perform consistently over many years. "Sachin Tendulkar. He represented our country so well for so many years and made so many records for us," Chopra explained. "The way he faced challenges from many great bowlers and still performed exceptionally — I would want that superpower and try to do the same. It would help me handle challenges that come my way with a calm mindset".

Neeraj Chopra has been in impressive form this season. He recently secured his third win of the season at the Ostrava Golden Spike event with a throw of 88.16m. He also won the Paris Diamond League with an opening throw of 88.16m.

The interaction between Chopra and Lee has been well-received by fans of both sports, highlighting the mutual respect and admiration between athletes from different disciplines. Lee's gracious response to Chopra's lighthearted suggestion has further cemented his reputation as a true sportsman. As Neeraj Chopra continues to represent India on the global stage, his achievements and interactions like these inspire aspiring athletes and sports enthusiasts across the nation.
