Rangers Acquire Gavrikov, Trade Miller: A New Defensive Era Begins in New York

The New York Rangers have made significant moves to their defensive lineup, signing Vladislav Gavrikov and trading K'Andre Miller. Gavrikov, a sought-after defenseman, has signed a seven-year contract with the Rangers. In a corresponding move, K'Andre Miller has been traded to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Gavrikov's addition addresses a crucial need for the Rangers, as he is expected to take on a top-four role, potentially pairing with Adam Fox. The 29-year-old is known for his shutdown ability and dependable defensive play, which the Rangers hope will stabilize their blue line after a disappointing end to last season. Gavrikov is coming off a strong season where he recorded 5 goals and 30 points with a +26 rating.

To accommodate Gavrikov's contract, which is projected to be around $8 million annually, the Rangers needed to create cap space. Trading Miller, a restricted free agent who has garnered interest from several teams, achieves this while also allowing Gavrikov to step into a prominent role on the left side of the defense.

K'Andre Miller, drafted 22nd overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, is now heading to the Carolina Hurricanes. The 25-year-old defenseman had a tough year along with the rest of the Rangers team. In the 2023-2024 season, Miller scored eight goals, recorded 22 assists, and finished with a plus-5 rating.

Prior to the Gavrikov signing, there was speculation about potential destinations for Miller, including the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. The San Jose Sharks were also mentioned as a possible suitor, with the possibility of acquiring his rights via trade to avoid giving up high-value draft picks via an offer sheet.

The Rangers have also reportedly traded Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks. In return, New York received forward prospect Carey Terrance and a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
