The New York Rangers have made a significant splash in the free agency market, securing defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov with a seven-year, $49 million contract. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $7 million, was reported by TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on July 1, 2025. This move aims to solidify the Rangers' defense and provide a reliable partner for Adam Fox.

Gavrikov, 29, is coming off a season where he played all 82 games for the Los Angeles Kings, recording five goals and 25 assists for a total of 30 points. He averaged 23:05 of ice time per game, showcasing his importance to the Kings' defensive structure. Known for his defensive prowess, Gavrikov blocked a career-high 140 shots last season and has become a force in his own zone.

Drafted 159th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2015, Gavrikov has accumulated 29 goals and 106 assists in 435 career games split between the Blue Jackets and Kings. His journey to the NHL also includes international success, as he won a gold medal with the Olympic Athletes of Russia at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. He also secured bronze medals at the 2017 and 2019 IIHF World Championships.

Gavrikov's playing style is characterized by his size, strength, and smart decision-making. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 220 pounds, he is known for taking on tough assignments and is a valuable penalty killer. While not known for his offensive numbers, Gavrikov's impact in his own zone is substantial, making him a sought-after defenseman in the free agent market.

With the addition of Gavrikov, the Rangers are reportedly trading K'Andre Miller to the Carolina Hurricanes. This move signifies a strategic shift in the Rangers' defensive lineup, prioritizing Gavrikov's experience and defensive capabilities.

This signing reflects the Rangers' commitment to improving their team after a disappointing 2024-25 season. With a new coach and strategic acquisitions, the Rangers are aiming to return to playoff contention. Gavrikov's arrival is expected to provide stability and leadership on the blue line, complementing the skills of other key players.
