Borussia Dortmund have secured their place in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Monterrey. The match, held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, saw Dortmund hold off a strong second-half fightback from the Mexican side.
Serhou Guirassy was the hero of the hour, netting twice in the first half to give Dortmund a comfortable lead. Both goals were assisted by Karim Adeyemi, with the first coming in the 14th minute after Adeyemi's exquisite back-heel pass. Guirassy doubled the lead just ten minutes later, again capitalizing on Adeyemi's vision to slot the ball into the corner of the net. Guirassy, the 29-year-old striker, has been in impressive form this season, with three goals in four tournament games and 37 across all competitions.
Monterrey, however, came back strong in the second half. German Berterame reduced the deficit just three minutes after the restart, heading home from close range after a cross deflected off a Dortmund defender. Monterrey continued to press, dominating possession and creating several chances to equalize. However, Dortmund's goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was in fine form, denying Monterrey's Jesus Corona and others to maintain Dortmund's lead. Despite Monterrey holding a 59% edge in possession and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal in the second half, Dortmund managed to hold on for the win.
With this victory, Borussia Dortmund have set up a quarter-final clash against Real Madrid. The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Dortmund will be without Jobe Bellingham for that match, as he will be suspended due to yellow card accumulation. The winner of that match will advance to the semi-finals, which will be held on July 8 and 9. The Club World Cup final is scheduled for July 13 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Dortmund's path to the quarter-finals saw them top Group F with wins against Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD. Monterrey, meanwhile, finished second in Group E. The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 features 32 teams from across the globe. The tournament is being held in the United States from June 14 to July 13, 2025.
